Patriarch Athenagoras (Spyrou) was the 268th Archbishop of Constantinople, leading the Orthodox Church from 1948 to 1972. A man of peace, reconciliation, and love, Patriarch Athenagoras left an indelible mark on God’s Church wherever he served, as Metropolitan of Kerkyra (1922 to 1930), as Archbishop of North and South America (1930 to 1948), and as Ecumenical Patriarch (1948 to 1972). He will always be remembered for his breakthrough relationship with the Roman Catholic Church, leading to the lifting of the excommunications of 1054.
